If you currently have a Cigna Individual or Family medical health insurance plan, there is an important change you should know about before the 2027 Open Enrollment period.
Cigna Healthcare has announced that it will discontinue its Individual & Family medical plans effective January 1, 2027. This applies to Cigna medical plans purchased through the ACA Marketplace and directly from Cigna. (Provider Newsroom)
Which States Are Affected?
Cigna is currently offering Individual & Family medical plans in 11 states, and it plans to exit the individual medical market in those states for 2027:
- Arizona
- Colorado
- Florida
- Georgia
- Illinois
- Indiana
- Mississippi
- North Carolina
- Tennessee
- Texas
- Virginia
Cigna’s exit applies to its individual medical business in these states, although the exact plans and counties affected can vary by location. (KFF)
Texas Customers: An Important Example
For Texas, Cigna has filed to exit the individual medical market effective January 1, 2027.
The affected counties listed in Cigna’s withdrawal filing are:
Collin, Crosby, Dallas, El Paso, Ellis, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Lubbock, Rockwall, and Tarrant.
The filing indicates that approximately 12,119 people in Texas are affected, including people enrolled both on and off the Marketplace. (ACA Signups)
If you’re in one of these counties and currently have a Cigna Individual HMO plan, you’ll need to select new coverage for 2027.
What Happens to Your Current Cigna Plan?
The good news is that your current 2026 coverage does not end immediately.
Cigna has confirmed that customers with affected Individual & Family medical plans will have coverage through December 31, 2026, as long as they continue to meet their plan requirements and pay their premiums. (Provider Newsroom)
However, your Cigna medical plan will not renew for 2027.
That means you’ll need to shop for a new health insurance plan during the 2027 Open Enrollment period.
What Should You Do?
You don’t need to panic or cancel your current Cigna plan.
Instead, use this time to prepare for Open Enrollment and compare your 2027 options.
When choosing a new plan, consider:
- Monthly premium
- Deductible
- Copays and coinsurance
- Maximum out-of-pocket costs
- Your doctors and hospitals
- Prescription medications
- Network coverage
- Your family’s healthcare needs
A plan with a lower monthly premium isn’t always the best option if your doctors aren’t in-network or your prescriptions aren’t covered.
What About Cigna Dental?
This change is specifically about Cigna Individual & Family medical plans.
Cigna has stated that its Individual & Family dental plans are not affected and are expected to continue for 2027 and beyond. (Provider Newsroom)
Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute
If Cigna is your current medical insurance carrier, 2027 will be a good time to review your options carefully.
There may be other carriers and plans available in your area, but the choices can vary based on your state, county, ZIP code, income, household size, doctors, and healthcare needs.
